Features of an EP Equipment Li-Ion Forklift
Unlike lead-acid batteries, Li-ion batteries don’t require active maintenance to extend their service life – largely eliminating the cost of battery upkeep, maintenance, and infrastructure.
Lithium-Ion batteries have a lifecycle of 3000 or more compared to just 500-1000 cycles in lead-acid. Li-Ion batteries generally last for several times the number of cycles as lead acid batteries, leading to a longer effective lifespan for Li-Ion products.
Cycles are also counted differently for Li-Ion batteries, in % of charge rather than one cycle every time you connect the charger to the battery. For Li-Ion batteries, this means that 10% charge is 1/10 of a cycle, while 10% charge of a lead-acid battery is 1 full cycle.
Lithium-Ion batteries offer high power density which allows these batteries to be relatively light and compact at only 1/3 the weight of lead-acid batteries. These smaller, lighter batteries means that electric FLT manufacturers like EP can develop more ergonomic, spacious, and powerful forklifts.
Lead-acid batteries need a full charge cycle of 8-12 hours to keep the batteries chemistry in balance, while Li-Ion batteries are primed for opportunity charging. Li-Ion batteries can be charged for short periods like 10 minutes during a break, for example; this offers a unique way to work shifts and reduce the overall charge that needs to be carried around in the truck.
Higher efficiency makes Li-Ion batteries charge faster, with a greater effective battery capacity and reduces the downtime of warehouse duties.
Li-Ion batteries will take as little as 2-3 hours for a full charge, which is 5-6 hours less than a conventional lead-acid battery.
Most Lithium-Ion batteries are at least 95% percent efficient, all of which is energy that can actually be used in powering the forklift. This is in contrast to lead-acid batteries which will see battery efficiencies around 80-85%.
Lithium-Ion batteries are non-toxic and are harmless to the environment. These batteries don’t have any emissions which makes for a much cleaner technology overall, and safer on the environment than a lead-acid powered truck.
